Ernest Davey was born in Fordham in 1892 (Newmarket Q2-1892 3B:540), the son of Robert and Etherlinda DAVEY (née BOYDEN).
1901 census...Aged 9, he was at Carter Street, Fordham with his father Robert DAVEY [42], carter on farm, born Burwell; his mother Ether [35]; brothers Arthur [14] farm labourer and Bert [11]. All except his father were born in Fordham. 1911 census...Aged 18, a nurseryman/gardener, he was at Pound Lane, Fordham with his parents, brother Arthur, Bertie and John Boyden [16], all farm labourers sister Emily [9] and brother Robert James [5]. The new siblings were all born in Fordham. |

He enlisted in Newmarket. The 8th Suffolks were in the Bray-Carnoy region leading up to the Battle of the Somme. From 23rd to 27th June they were in the front line and made two raids. Neither was a marked success but they did gather some useful information. Six men died on the 27th, 4 of them buried in Carnoy.
